The essay traces the story and outlines the structure of the book "Il catalogo per soggetti" written by Carlo Revelli. The book was recently republished, and it looks like a milestone in the history of Italian subject classification.

Although facing the change of the tools and the 40 years passed after its first publication, the volume still remains an essential reading in order to understand and practice subject cataloguing.
